Why Free Article Directories Will Not Survive

- - -

It is with great regret that I must announce that The Bit Bot Free Article Directory has closed it’s doors. It was, after all, an experiment. That is such a shame because I really had high hopes for it as a source of Adsense income which turned out, in the end, to be a very inefficient business model.

Side note: Adsense, by the way, is a horrible way to make money unless you have more traffic than you know what to do with. Even then it can only be viewed as “supplemental” income. The ads are extremely unattractive and, in my opinion, detract from the look and professionalism of a website. I don’t even have them on this blog anymore. (Edit: OK, I put it back on, but only at the bottom of the post and only for page impression tracking purposes.)

Unfortunately for me, as a “former” article directory administrator, I was fighting an non-winnable battle in terms of verifying that the articles that were submitted were original. Additionally, all the directory turned out to be was an archive of other people’s syndicated blog posts…not much value there, but a great tactic if you are a blogger.

What I have learned from this experience is that plagiarism and copyright infringement rule the internet. People have no shame and there is no sure way to guarantee that their work is theirs. Copying the work of another person and slapping your own fake name on it is the flavor of the day, every day. This is unfortunate because there are many great writers out there and there are many great article marketers out there with highly informative content to share. These are the individuals that pay the price as do the rest of us. Additionally, as a “former” article directory administrator, I found that verifying that each and every article as being owned and copyrighted by it’s submitter was next to impossible. My hat is off to article directories that have been around a while and that fight this battle every day.

The Bit Bot e-Zine is down for the count and I must admit, it was fun. Great authors posted great content, but I am glad to be rid of it and do not miss babysitting the children that they had to work with. This is my shortest post ever. I would love to hear comments about this topic.
