Small Business Web Marketing Basics

If there is one thing I have learned while working with small business owners is it this: they all need cheap, effective, long-term advertising for their small business.

It doesn’t matter if its a small family owned restaurant, a hair salon, a mechanic’s garage, or any class of small business where you provide a simple product or service, you need effective cheap advertising.

The reason, of course, is because you are competing against businesses with giant advertising budgets. So what is one to do?

The Great Equalizer

Web-based marketing has, to a great degree, become a great equalizer in terms of market visibility.

With the introduction of Web 2.0 based properties such as social networking sites as well as video sharing sites, marketing a business is very affordable, even for small business.

The trick is to actually get the ball rolling in terms of taking advantage of these potential advertising avenues.

This is where most small business owners “drag their feet” I have found. This is usually because they have to spend all of their time managing their business and really don’t have time to learn about being a webmaster.

What Exactly Do I Need?

If you are a small business owner and are interested in leveraging the potential that the web has to offer in terms of cheap advertising, then here is what I suggest you have:

  • Your Own Website/Blog – You have to give people a place to go to learn about you. What is more, it has to contain a complete and coherent listing of your products and services as well as a way for potential customers to get in contact with you.
  • At Least One Social Networking Property – I highly recommend Google Plus. Google does not allow automated posting on Google Plus, so there are actually people on it instead of bots. This means that actual people will be reading your posts.
  • A YouTube Channel – This would be a great place to upload videos and tutorials about your products and services. People who film tutorials do great with their own channel. Additionally, this is a super-high traffic site, so the potential for a ton of traffic goes along with it.

Where Do I start?

So where do you start? Simple. With your own website. You have to have your own website, something that all of these advertising avenues funnel towards. Something that gives inquirers somewhere to go and read about you and what you offer. Something that is online and available 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Its kinda like a sales rep that never sleeps and is always in a good mood no matter what time it is.

Of course, if you’re like most small business owners, you have no idea where to start and really don’t have the time to sit down and learn how to do all of this.

  1. I think the post is so very apt for small businesses. Most of the small business owners fail to see the importance of a website. They also fear that advertising will cost them a lot. A lot of them have yet to come to terms with the power of web advertising. I think this post is going to be very helpful to them. Thanks for sharing.

  2. Mark, I can’t read your article properly. I have a new laptop and the toolbar with the bookmarking icons appears on the beginning of the rows, “eating” a couple of letters. Maybe I’m not your only reader with this problem, you should check it out.

  3. Excellent points for small businesses looking out to make a mark on the internet. I’d like to add that Google+ though being an effective marketing platform, the traffic generated from it will be relatively low. So it’s better we link other social networking accounts to our Google+ account. Thanks for sharing.

  4. I think Web marketing is something that small businesses have yet to try. They need to understand that this form of marketing is most-suited to them as it is cheap and highly effective. Thanks for sharing this.

  5. The essence of marketing is to understand your customers’ needs and develop a plan that surrounds those needs. Let’s face it anyone that has a business has a desire to grow their business. The most effective way to grow and expand your business is by focusing on organic growth.

  6. The small business firms needs cheap and effective advertising to promote their business is just because they cant invest the big amount only for the advertising or they will not be able to set their own websites. This is the good job you are doing there by coming forward to help them out.

  7. Nice tips for newbies & veterians, to be successful at internet marketing it is a good idea to write timeless content for your site. If your site’s visitors stumble upon old content and find it dated they may leave your site and never return. You can easily make content timeless by adding links to your new articles on your old ones.
