If there is one thing for certain, its the fact that keyword-based domain names really kinda “took it on the chin” after the last update.
I am, of course, referring to the Google “Exact Match Domain” update that lessened the advantage that EMDs held over non-EMD domain names.
This doesn’t mean that EMDs are worthless now, it simply means that they don’t have the advantage with respect to ranking for their keyword that they used to have.

If you’re into niche marketing like I am, then this is actually great news because it means that the “playing field” for organic search rankings has been leveled.
Pre-EMD update, webmasters who owned keyword-based domain names held an advantage over YOU if you wanted to enter their niche and compete with them.
Now, you can buy and “brandable”, “non-keyword-based” domain name and enjoy the fact that they no longer hold this advantage.
Personally, I think this will re-open many niches for many of us that have been closed to this point.
