In the UK alone, there are 1.5 million people with learning disabilities. Some of these people are visibly disabled, but there are others that are normal in most areas of development, but have difficulty functioning in other parts of their life. If you do not have a friend or family member with a learning disability then you may find it hard to imagine the difficulties that they have.
What is a Learning Disability
There are a lot of misconceptions surrounding learning disabilities. The casual way in which the terms “learning disability” and “learning difficulty” are used interchangeably is the root of many of these misconceptions.
Learning difficulties such as dyslexia are not necessarily learning disabilities. Someone who has a learning disability may also have dyslexia or dyspraxia, but they are separate conditions. Learning difficulties can usually be worked around, and the effects of them can be minimised. Learning disabilities are broader in scope, and unfortunately often less well understood by the general public.
