So far in this series, we have determined that we want to build an online business, selected a niche, determined whether or not there was money being spent in that niche and we began to venture out to determine whether or not suitable products are available for resale in this niche.
In the last installment, we began to discuss sourcing digital products from vendors such as Clickbank. Monetizing your online business using these types of products is a very simple process. Simply, all one is doing is presenting the visitor with sales copy that sells the product behind the affiliate link.
In this chapter, we will discuss selling our own product, perhaps one that we host on our own site. This is much more fun in my opinion because we are the owner of the product and not just an affiliate. Additionally, this gives us the opportunity to branch out and develop some new skills in that a landing page and download page will have to be designed and uploaded to our server. So how do I sell my own product online and set up my process so that my visitors automatically get a link to my product download upon my receipt of payment?
To do this, you will need to set up a Paypal account. Once you have set up a Paypal account, go to the “Merchant Services” tab and click on “Buy Now” button link and just follow the simple steps. Step 1) If you have a custom “buy now” button you would like to use, refer to the URL of the graphic file that will be used. To make things easy select “Use my primary email address…”. Step 2) You can skip this. Step 3) Keep it simple. Select “No”, “No” and “No” for the first three options because this is a download. We are not shipping hard goods.
It is important to note that at this point we should already have a landing or sales page in place as well as a download page with a link to our product for download. There are two more items we need to fill out before we move on and these are the links to our pages. The first is a link to whatever page you want Paypal to send your visitor to if they cancel their order. Generally, I send them back to the sales page so they can reconsider canceling their order. The second option is the page your visitor is sent to if they complete their purchase and payment has been verified by Paypal. This page will contain a big fat THANK YOU with a smiley face and a link to your product file.
A note of caution: Major search engines are very good at finding these pages. For that reason, add the NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW, NOARCHIVE and NOSNIPPET META tag functions to your download page. This way potential buyers are not served your download page in a search query. We want to keep that location private.
The nice thing about this entire process is that it is automated and anyone, anywhere at any time can purchase your product and begin using it immediately. Additionally, the type of products that you can sell this way are endless. You can sell informational products, software, websites, databases, eBooks, templates, articles, videos, blueprints, etc. Basically, you can sell anything that can be stored on a computer. The possibilities are endless.
One interesting thing about this process is that it can be scaled up very easily and your efforts can be compounded. How? Simple. Set up squeeze pages. If you are not familiar with squeeze pages, they are simply pages designed to promote a product exactly like a landing. The difference is that the product is free in this case and is in exchange for an email address. For examples of squeeze pages, look to the top of this article and look for “FREE MARKETING TOOLS” in blue. There you can find several free tools that you can use. Once you have set up a squeeze page, you can begin harvesting emails and start building a list to sell to. Just remember, if you are going to advertise products to subscribers that have joined your “opt-in” list follow the CAN-SPAM laws.
That is all for now. In the next chapter in this series, we will discuss how to set up a website to sell and drop ship hard goods for brick and mortar establishments with affiliate programs.
As always, I am interested in your comments…:)

Hi Mark,
Very informative post. I like your writing style.
As a further note, you could now sell your digital products via freemarket.com.
I have a question though, what do you sell personally?
Cheers!
Dannybuntu
Hey Danny. Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the info. To answer your question…I am not selling any digital products at the moment. I actually sell hard goods. I will show you an example in one of my upcoming posts…:)
