Marketing Tool Analysis – How Effective is Twitter?

As with all of my posts, I promise this one will be short and to the point. How effective is Twitter as a marketing tool? By now most of us, if not all, are very familiar with the micro-blogging tool Twitter. The term micro-blog simply means that the number of bits in any one post cannot exceed some...

Important Note! This article is about supplementing unique and original content on your blog with RSS feeds from related blogs and websites as a means to add value. Do not, under any circumstances steal or copy the content of others as this is illegal!

With all of the nice content management scripts available these days, it is now very easy to setup a website and launch it within about an hour. Once the website is up and running, monetizing it is as simple as adding a small block of adsense code. In this post we will walk through the steps required to setup an autoblog and see just how easy it is to create a source of income based around syndicated content.

To begin, we have a checklist of items that we will need before we get started. You will need:

1) A web domain 2) Hosting 3) An Adsense account

To begin, purchase a domain name from a registrar like GoDaddy. Select the dot com domain name of your choice and purchase it. If you want to save money, you can stick with a dot net, dot org, or a dot info domain. Dot info domains are the cheapest and usually have more of a selection of available keywords to use as domain names. If you already have a domain, then you can skip to step two.

Next, obtain hosting. There are countless hosting companies out there and tons of resellers, so picking one is a job in itself. One highly reputable hosting company is HostGator. I recommend HostGator because I know personally that their servers are set up correctly for this purpose meaning they support PHP and MySQL. Not all free hosting companies do. Additionally, you can obtain reliable hosting there for as little as $5 per month. There are probably others that are cheaper, but I will leave that to you.

Once you have obtained hosting, forward your domain name servers to your new host so that your website can be accessed via web browser once you create it.

Next download the latest WordPress version from WordPress.org and upload it to your server using FTP software. If you do not have FTP software, no problem, you can download Filezilla for free and it works great. Now you can unzip your WordPress download and upload it to your root folder or a sub-folder or sub-domain if you are adding your auto-blog to an existing domain or website. Next, point your browser to that folder and follow the setup instructions. An even easier route that this would be to use one of the free script installers that is available in your hosting account’s CPanel such as Elefante Free Scripts or Fantastico De Luxe. Both of these installers are available on most servers and carry the WordPress script. In these cases setting up WordPress is simply the click of a button.

Once you have WordPress installed, you are getting very close to have you auto-blog up and running. We next have to install the plugin that makes all of this possible, the WP-o-matic plugin. Download the zip file and install it by going to the administrator dashboard in WordPress. Scroll down to the “Plugins” section in the left column. Click “Plugins” to drop the menu and “Add New”. Upload the zip file and activate it.

Next, go to “Settings” and then “WP-o-matic” and add your campaign which is simply adding your title and a feed that is optimized for syndication. It should be noted though that if a feed is syndicated to your auto-blog, reference MUST be made to the original source to keep things legal. Posting the content of another website using anything other than their RSS feed and without their permission is illegal.

It might be noted that not all feeds are automatically optimized for syndication like this one is. How is it optimized you ask? Simple. The entire article has been sent to the feed, unlike most feeds that cut off at about 300 characters or so. Additionally, my own Adsense code has not been added to this feed. That way, I will not be posting Adsense ads to your blog that will competing with your ads for clicks. This means that by using this feed, you get the full article posted to your blog with no third party ads included.

So now you have an auto-blog. Congratulations. Now all you have to do is monetize it. There are a variety of ways you can do this and that is a topic in itself. The easiest way to monetize it is to open your own Adsense account and simply input your Adsense code. Once you do that, you now have an auto-blog that is automatically updated with fresh content on a regular basis which means regular readers. If you like, log on every once in a while and write your own article and post a review on an Amazon product or a Clickbank product to monetize it further. The important thing is that you build your readers through fresh content. Remember, money follows traffic and content is key. With auto-blogs, content is automatic.

If you want to kick the traffic up a notch, you can read my post on social bookmarking, another great way to boost traffic.

Now that you know how to set up an autoblog, some highly suggested reading is the post on the importance of regularly adding unique content to your autoblog.

Thanks for the article, it’s very well written. I currently have 1 wordpress blog and have just setup everything to do the WordPress 3.0 multiple blog thing (on different domains). I really wonder if it’s possible to make money to autoblogging since Google restricts content that’s duplicated. Do you have any experience making money with an Autoblog?

Jeremy, thanks for the nice comment. You raise a very good question. I have actually researched this question a great deal and have come to the same conclusion that many others have and that is simply this. Google doesn’t restrict duplicate content, it simply displays the version of it that it considers to be from the most relevant source. Respected, indexed media sites that post duplicate content such as articles released by the Associated Press (AP) are indexed all of the time with no penalty. Syndicated content has been around since media began. The trick with autoblogging is to drive traffic to it using a variety of methods such as social bookmarking and not relying solely on search engines. That is the reason I have included the link to the article about Onlywire. Additionally, you can use Twitter. If you search this blog you will find an article that discusses automating Twitter. It rocks. Currently about only twenty percent of my traffic comes from search engines as per my Google analytics tracking. The other eighty percent is driven and the techniques that I use can be duplicated for autoblogs. You will not get rich, but you can definitely make money by autoblogging. It is more of a supplemental income. That is the only reason people do it. You just have to keep in mind that feeds that post the entire article with no ads are the ones you want, such as the feed on this blog which you are welcome to syndicate and post your own ads to.

Side note, stay away from rss to Javascript. Search engines do not see the content.

This is really very useful. Thank you for your valuable information. Bookmarked;)

Thanks. I hope you found the information you needed.

I have an question for u can u use any keywords to optimize the auto blog or do u have to stick with what the content is talking about?

Thanks, Gregory

@Gregory

You need to find blog feeds that post using keywords of interest or similar. Additionally, you also need to add your own unique, quality, keyword optimized articles on a regular basis.
